A Century after! Rediscovery of the ancient catfish Diplomystes Bleeker 1858 (Siluriformes: Diplomystidae) in coastal river basins of Chile and its implications for conservation Neotropical Ichthyology
Muñoz-Ramírez,Carlos P.; Briones,Raul; Colin,Nicole; Fierro,Pablo; Górski,Konrad; Jara,Alfonso; Manosalva,Aliro.
ABSTRACT The ancient catfish family Diplomystidae, with seven species endemic to rivers of southern South America, represents one of the oldest branches of the diverse order Siluriformes. With most species endangered, new reports of these species become extremely valuable for conservation. Currently, it is assumed that Diplomystes species inhabit only Andean (large) basins, and that they are extinct from coastal (small) basins from which their presence have not been recorded since 1919. Here, we document new records of the family Diplomystidae in the Laraquete and Carampangue basins, two coastal basins from the Nahuelbuta Coast Range, Chile, with no previous reports. This finding represents the rediscovery of the genus in coastal basins in more than a...

Composição em tamanho dos peixes (Actinopterygii, Teleostei) de ribeirões da bacia do rio Tibagi, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Shibatta,Oscar A.; Cheida,Carolina C..
The standard length of 7610 specimens of 43 species from eight streams of rio Tibagi basin was obtained in order to analyze the means of fish sizes. The higher mean size was observed in Gymnotus carapo Linnaeus, 1758 (165,5 mm) and the smaller, in Phalloceros caudimaculatus (Hensel, 1868) (16,25 mm). Some fish like Acestrorhynchus lacustris (Reinhardt, 1874), Leporinus obtusidens (Valenciennes, 1836), Gymnotus carapo Linneus, 1758 and Synbranchus marmoratus Bloch, 1795 can reach big or medium size when adults but were collected only young, evidencing they use some streams in beginning of life. The mean size of total species was 49,81mm, what shows the small size composition of fishes in the streams. The Kolmogov-Smirnov test comparing the mean size of all...

Diversity and distribution of riffle beetle assemblages (Coleoptera, Elmidae) in montane rivers of Southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Braun,Bruna Marmitt; Salvarrey,Andrea Vanesa Batalla; Kotzian,Carla Bender; Spies,Marcia Regina; Pires,Mateus Marques.
The diversity and spatio-temporal distribution of Elmidae (Coleoptera) assemblages in montane rivers and streams of southernmost Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul state) were studied. Six genera were found, represented mostly by larval specimens. Austrolimnius and Macrelmis are new occurrences in the region. Assemblages’ genera composition and dominance were related to the presence of the macrophyte Podostemum. Also, water temperature and stream depth and velocity were the most important drivers related to the assemblages’ distribution. Richness and abundance were positively related to high water velocity and negatively to stream depth. Temporal patterns were detected especially in assemblage abundance, yet a slight pattern in richness was also observed. The...

Influence of environmental quality on the diet of Astyanax in a microbasin of central western Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i2.15570 Biological Sciences
Souza, Rosangela Guarisso de; Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul; Lima-Junior, Sidnei Eduardo; Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul.
This study analyzed physicochemical characteristics of the water, degradation of the surroundings and the influence of these factors on the diet of two fish species of Astyanax in Tarumã stream microbasin, central western Brazil. Fish were collected in eight sites between 2007 and 2010, using gillnets and sieves. Environmental variables were evaluated by a principal component analysis and the diet based on Spearman’s correlation. The variables width, type of riparian vegetation, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, temperature, oxidation and reduction potential, presence of waste, and altitude have separated the sampling sites into two groups: ‘less impacted’ and ‘more impacted’. The two characid species presented omnivorous habit, typical of...

Influence of land use changes on water chemistry in streams in the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Silva,Daniela M.L.; Camargo,Plínio B.; Mcdowell,William H.; Vieira,Ivan; Salomão,Marcos S.M.B.; Martinelli,Luiz A..
Streamwater is affected by several processes in the watershed including anthropogenic activities that result in changes in water quality as well as in the functioning of these stream ecosystems. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the concentration of major ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, NH4+, NO3-, NO2-, Cl-, SO4(2-), PO4(3-), HCO3-) in streams in the state of São Paulo (southeast Brazil). The sampling sites are located at undisturbed (ombrophilus dense forest, semideciduous forest and savanna - cerrado) and disturbed areas (pasture, urbanization and sugar cane crops). Streamwater chemistry varied according to land use change and, in general, was higher in disturbed sites. Streams located in undisturbed sites at Ribeira de Iguape/Alto Paranapanema watershed...

Assis,Gisele Fernanda Pereira; Silva,Samiris Pereira da; Silva,Ludmylla Fernanda de Siqueira; Costa,Regiane Luiza da; Fonseca,Luany Weiler da; De-Lamonica-Freire,Ermelinda Maria; Figueiredo,Daniela Maimoni de; Oliveira,Márcia Teixeira de.
Abstract: Cyanobacteria and microalgae make up a very diverse group and exhibit diverse morphological, biochemical and physiological differences. The knowledge of these organisms that inhabit epicontinental waters in Brazil is extremely heterogeneous in relation to the geographic region and the taxonomic group. Taxonomically there is much more knowledge about the algae of the South and Southeast regions of the country than there is about the algae of the North and Central-West regions. Therefore, this research presents a revised and updated knowledge of the algae that occur in the National Park of the Chapada dos Guimarães (PNCG) and surrounding areas. Our area of study is located in the state of Mato Grosso, in the center-west region of Brazil. The...

Land use change in the Atlantic Forest affects carbon and nitrogen sources of streams as revealed by the isotopic composition of terrestrial invertebrates Biota Neotropica
Augusto,Fernanda Gaudio; Tassoni Filho,Mauricio; Ferreira,Anderson; Pereira,Alexandre Leandro; Camargo,Plínio Barbosa de; Martinelli,Luiz Antonio.
Terrestrial invertebrates link terrestrial systems to aquatic ones, making vegetal material produced in the watershed available to aquatic food webs. In this study, using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, we evaluated the importance of introduced C4 grasses as a source of carbon in aquatic food webs of headwater streams of the coastal Atlantic Forest located on the north coast of the State of São Paulo, in the southeastern region of Brazil. Terrestrial invertebrates were collected in two streams: one where the main land cover was pristine montane Atlantic Forest (forest stream) and another where the main land cover was introduced C4 forage grasses for livestock (pasture stream). The average δ13C of terrestrial invertebrates collected in the forest...

Soares,Bruno E.; Rosa,Daniela C. O.; Silva,Nathália C. S.; Albrecht,Miriam P.; Caramaschi,Érica P..
ABSTRACT Fishes of the order Gymnotiformes have high diversity of oral and head morphology, which suggests trophic specializations within each clade. The aim of this study was to describe resource use patterns by two fish species (Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni and Gymnotus coropinae) in the National Forest Saracá-Taquera, Oriximiná - Pará, analyzing microhabitat use, diet composition, feeding strategies, niche breadth and niche overlap. Stomach contents of 101 individuals (41 G. rondoni and 60 G. coropinae), sampled in 23 headwater streams were analyzed and volume of food items was quantified to characterize their feeding ecology. Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni was captured mainly on sandy bottoms, whereas G. coropinae in crevices. Both species had a...
